Same-day spine surgery in Pittsburgh
Which operations usually mean going home the same day, and how that decision gets made.
Reviewed by Ryan Sauber, MD · Fellowship Director, AHN Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship · Last reviewed October 2026
Many spine operations that once meant several days in the hospital are now done as outpatient surgery, with patients sleeping in their own bed that night. Same-day surgery isn't a different operation. It's the same surgery done through smaller incisions, with a recovery plan built so that going home is safe.
Whether you go home the same day depends on two things: the operation you need, and your own health and situation at home. Both are worked out with you before surgery, so you know what to plan for.
Which operations usually mean going home the same day

| Operation | Usual plan |
|---|---|
| Endoscopic discectomy or decompression | Home the same day |
| Cervical disc replacement | Home the same day |
| ACDF, one or two levels | Home the same day |
| ACDF, three levels | Usually one night in the hospital |
| Minimally invasive lumbar fusion | Often the same day at one level; an overnight stay is more likely at more than one level |
Endoscopic surgery stands out in one more way: most patients go home without needing any opioid pain medication.
When a night in the hospital makes more sense
For larger operations such as a lumbar fusion, a few things make an overnight stay more likely: older age, other medical conditions that need watching, surgery at more than one level, and not having someone at home to help in the first days. None of these rule out surgery. They change where the first night is spent.
The goal is the same either way: getting up and walking early, keeping pain under control, and going home when it's safe to.
Where surgery is done
Same-day spine surgery can be done at Allegheny General Hospital, Wexford Hospital, or the outpatient surgery center at Wexford Hospital. Which one fits depends on the operation and your overall health, and it's part of the planning before surgery.
The day of surgery
What the day looks like varies a lot from one operation to another. An endoscopic discectomy and a fusion are very different days, so the timing, what you need to do before going home, and who should be with you are covered ahead of time for your specific surgery.
After you get home
Going home early doesn't mean being on your own. Patients stay in close contact with Dr. Sauber and his nurse and physician assistant through recovery, and you leave knowing who to call if anything doesn't seem right.

Common questions
Which spine surgeries can be done as outpatient surgery?
Endoscopic discectomy and decompression, cervical disc replacement, and ACDF at one or two levels usually mean going home the same day. Many single-level minimally invasive fusions do too. A three-level ACDF usually means one night in the hospital.
Will I need opioids after endoscopic spine surgery?
Usually not. Most patients go home after endoscopic surgery without needing any opioid pain medication. The incision is small, the muscles are left largely undisturbed, and long-acting local anesthetic is placed at the incision.
Is going home the same day the right choice for everyone?
No. It depends on the operation and on you. For larger operations such as fusion, an overnight stay is more likely with older age, other medical conditions that need watching, surgery at more than one level, or no one at home to help. That decision is made with you before surgery.
Where is same-day spine surgery done?
At Allegheny General Hospital, Wexford Hospital, or the outpatient surgery center at Wexford Hospital. Where your surgery is done depends on the operation and your health.
What if I have a question or a problem after I get home?
You stay in close contact with Dr. Sauber and his nurse and physician assistant through recovery, and you leave with the number to call if anything doesn't seem right.
Talking it through
Same-day surgery is the usual plan in Dr. Sauber's practice for endoscopic surgery and most neck operations, and for many fusions. If you're weighing surgery and want to know whether going home the same day fits your operation and your situation, he's glad to go over it with you at an appointment.
